Hunter Valley Gardens are excited to be among some of the first owners of Wollemi Pines.
The discovery of the Wollemi Pine in 1994 will go down in history as one of the greatest botanical discoveries of the millenium. Found in a canyon in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, this species of plant was around before the dinosaurs and has survived over 17 ice ages. It is considered one of the world's rarest tree species.
Although the Wollomi Pine is one of the most threatened plants on Earth, it is highly versatile and easy to grow. It tolerates heat, cold, full sun and shade, as well as different types of soils. It is the ultimate survivor, having outlived both the dinosaurs and many of its contemporaries in the plant kingdom.
It seems the Wollemi Pine has been quite adaptable through the ages, able to cope with many changes in it's environment. Its ability to grow where there is little soil or sunlight, and making its home in protected canyons, has been important in surviving fires that are known to ravage our land. So too is its knack of producing new trunks from the base (coppicing), allowing individuals to regenerate when other species around it perished.
These trees come from the "Collectors Edition", and are the first cultivated offspring of these ancient trees. Each of them can be traced back one generation to their parent tree in the wild. Less than 100 trees of this species are left in the wild, so the cultivation and auction of the plants is a good way to continue the survival of this remarkable tree.

One visit simply won't be enough to take in all there is to see and do at Hunter Valley Gardens!
